News of the Society for the Promotion of Mechanism and Institution Design

• Special Issue on Market Design in Memory of YingHua He.

In commemoration of Professor YingHua He's impactful career, the Journal of Mechanism and Institution Design will publish a special issue on market design, inviting contributions aligned with Professor He's diverse research interests. We welcome original empirical, experimental and theoretical research on market design. Corresponding authors are requested to submit their manuscript and a cover letter through email to cmid@york.ac.uk, and cc one of the guest editors. The cover letter should specify that the paper is submitted for the YingHua He special issue, and nominate one of the guest editors to handle the paper. The submission deadline is December 15, 2025.

The guest editors for this special issue will be Yan Chen and Jeremy Fox.

• 2026 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design.

Our 2026 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design will take place in the summer of 2026 at York, UK. The conference will be organized by Yuan Ju, Paul Schweinzer, and Zaifu Yang and will be hosted by the University of York; it will be an in-person meeting.

• 2024 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design.

Our 2024 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design took place in Budapest, July 8-12, 2024. The conference was organized by Péter Biró and hosted by Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary as an in-person meeting. The conference featured more than 300 participants, four one-hour keynote lectures by Paul Milgrom, Roger Myerson, Al Roth, and Eva Tardos, a one-hour special lecture by Vince Crawford, and three 45-minute plenary lectures by Nagore Iriberri (University of the Basque Country), Kristof Madarasz (London School of Economics), and Alex Teytelboym (University of Oxford). There were 284 contributed talks.

The conference celebrated Vincent Crawford's 75th birthday and his fundamental contributions to economic theory, game theory, and the Society.

The Journal of Mechanism and Institution Design will publish a special issue as a Festschrift to commemorate the 75th birthday of Vincent Crawford. We welcome submissions from all participants of the conference. For such submissions the scope is not limited to Mechanism Design, but can be broadened to include contributions to economic theory, game theory and experimental economics that have applications to or implications for mechanism design. Submitted papers will go through a normal but speedy reviewing process. Guest editors are Andreas Blume (theory papers), Jaimie Lien (experimental and empirical papers), and Alexander Teytelboym (theory papers). Papers can be submitted through the journal's submission email, with a single chosen guest editor in cc. If no guest editor is chosen, one will be selected by the journal.

• 2022 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design.

Our 2022 conference was organized by Jingfeng Lu, at the Department of Economics of National University of Singapore. It took place between 11--15th July, 2022, in an open access online environment instead of the originally planned in-person meeting in Singapore due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The call for papers and the conference programme are both online. There were 246 scheduled talks including four keynote speeches. The keynote speakers were:

The twelfth bi-annual Conference on Economic Design was held at University of Padova, Italy, from June 9-11, 2022.


• 2020 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design.

The 2020 conference was organized by Paul Schweinzer, Department of Economics at Alpen-Adria-University of Klagenfurt/Celovec, Austria, and took place on Thursday-Saturday, 11th-13th June 2020, in a free, open access online environment instead of the originally planned physical meeting at Klagenfurt due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The eleventh bi-annual Conference on Economic Design was held at Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary, on June 12-14, 2019.


• 2018 Conference on Mechanism and Institution Design.


The Society held its inaugural conference on Saturday-Sunday, 12th-13th May 2018. It was hosted by the Business School, Durham University, the third oldest and prestigious university in England. Durham is a beautiful small town with a magnificent Cathedral on the top of a hill, a world heritage site. The tenth bi-annual Conference on Economic Design was held at the University of York, United Kingdom, on three full days June 14-16 (Wed--Fri), 2017. It was organised by the Economics Department of the University of York and the Centre for Mechanism and Institution Design.

• We warmly congratulate Profs. Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson for being awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2024 for their contributions to "studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity".
